W.H.O select win Triangular Match

After a tense three-way battle, the Hickory International Triangular Match which was held on Carnoustie Championship course and Carnoustie Burnside on October 22/23 was won by the World Hickory Select.

Many of the world’s top hickory golfers had remained in Carnoustie Country following the World Hickory Open 2015 to compete in the two-day Hickory International Triangular Match. Following two days of hickory golf, the World Hickory Select, which was captained by hickory golf specialist David Edwards, beat Team Europe, which consisted mainly of Swedish golfers, by one point.

Team USA & Canada, winners of the 2014 international hickory match held at the end of last year’s World Hickory Open, came third – but have vowed to regain their title in 2016!

The Muirfield Experience

Hard on the heels of the Carnoustie Championship, a second chance to play hickory golf on one of the world’s greatest courses.

This time, it’s Muirfield, home, since its inception in 1891, to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.

A unique golfing day, starting with a full Scottish breakfast within the hallowed portals of the Muirfield Clubhouse itself, a 4-ball Stapleford played over some of the most famous acres in golf and rounded off with a great Muirfield lunch, prize-giving and an auction.

It’s all in aid of the Leith Rules Golfing Society, a charitable body established to fund and build a statue in memory of the celebrated John Rattray, one of golf’s most famous sons and the man who put his hand to the game’s very first set of rules. Rattray won the Leith Links’ first ever ‘Open’ competition in 1744 and, fittingly, his statue, designed by the well-known Fife sculptor, David Annan, is to be erected on the site of the original first hole. In supporting the project and thus restoring both the course and the man to their deserved place on the golfing pantheon, you have, yourself, just become part of the history of the game.

As a bonus, the good news is that Muirfield’s nearby neighbour, Craigielaw Golf Club, is offering accommodation in its splendid Lodge rooms at special rates for WHO players staying with them.

Two world famous courses in the space of a week, Christmas just came early.

The Archie Baird Trophy

For the first time in the history of the World Hickory Open, this year a major trophy is to be awarded for the leading Amateur score.

Archie Baird is a name that has been associated with the Open Championship since its inception in 2005. This great supporter has not only attended every event but he has also ennobled the proceedings by saying the Grace at every Gala Dinner.

And the world of hickory apart, Archie Baird has long been one of the most celebrated names in contemporary Scottish amateur golf. An avid collector, Archie’s enthusiasm for the history of the game borders on that of Roget for the English language. Interestingly, the two men have more in common for Archie, like Roget many years earlier, also studied medicine at Edinburgh University. It must be something in the air.

A founder member of the BGCS, sometime curator of the Heritage of Golf Museum and a former Captain of Gullane, Archie Baird is a deserving ambassador for the amateur golf in general and the hickory game in particular.

And, as a footnote, we might point out, to those of you meeting Archie for the first time, that the lady at his side, his wife Sheila, is the great grand-daughter of the legendary Willie Park Senior.

Provenance is rarely better confirmed.

The Tenth Anniversary Medallion

The year is 1826.

Beethoven is finishing off his masterpiece, the String Quartet in C Sharp Minor. Le Figaro is published for the very first time and Nicephore Niepce takes the world’s oldest surviving photograph.

And, in keeping with that fine creative spirit, the medallist and engraving firm of Alex Kirkwood and Son opened its doors in Edinburgh and the good news is that, one hundred and eighty-nine years later, they’re still there.

The even better news is that they have designed and fashioned the Tenth Anniversary World Hickory Open commemorative medallions, to be presented to all participants in this year’s event.

The current owner of Albany Street’s celebrated engravers, David Kirkwood, described the Hickory Open commission as ‘an honour’ and one that he especially welcomed, given his own enthusiasm for the hickory game.

And what or who will be featured on the medal’s face? Watch this space.
